What happens when you stop Botox?

Botox is only a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure, meaning you will have to keep topping it up every 3-4 months.

The question on a lot of people’s minds is, what happens if you stop completely?

After many years in the industry with our will trained clinicians, our team at SkinViva Manchester understand the ins and outs of Botox, that’s why we have the perfect answer!

How does Botox work?

After Botox is injected under the skin;

  1. It travels to the nerve terminal, once inside the nerve terminal its job is to trim of the receptor at the end of the nerve.
  2. The nerve terminal needs the nerve end to communicate to the muscle, without the nerve ending the message can’t get passed through to the muscle.
  3. Due to the message not being passed on it means the muscle isn’t being told to move and will stay dormant/frozen.

Are there any long-term effects of Botox?

Every time you treat a muscle with Botox it causes the muscle to reduce in size.

This means if you have had Botox over a number of years the muscle will be a lot smaller.

Even though this is very subtle change and one which is unnoticeable, some people have reported loss in Volume where this muscle is smaller.

This is an extremely rare outcome and is typically unnoticeable.

This is nothing to be alarmed by, if you are in the gym and spend time building your muscles, they will develop and grow.

If you then take time off the gym for an extended period, the muscles will essentially reduce in size again.

This is the same with Botox – you-re regularly using the muscles and once you have Botox injected, it relaxes the muscle.

What happens if you stop using Botox completely?

If you gradually stop using Botox the nerve endings will reform/rebuild.

Once they have fully recovered the full range of muscle movement you had before you started getting Botox treatments should return.

To conclude, Botox is a semi-permanent cosmetic treatment that will allow your face to return back to it’s original movement & shape if you choose to stop having treatments.
