Is my sweating normal? Botox for hyperhidrosis

Is my sweating normal?

Hyperhidrosis Treatment Sweating can be unpleasant, unsightly and annoying. However, it is normal for the body to sweat to a certain extent.

Sweating is key to the mechanisms your body uses to maintain the right temperature. When sweat evaporates, it cools your skin. If you get hot, your body will compensate by sweating more, so that the rate of cooling is intensified.

However, some people do sweat more than others. This could be due to a number of reasons:

  • Potential underlying medical condition e.g. thyroid, diabetes
  • Age e.g. puberty, menopause
  • Exertion – a more active lifestyle teaches the body to be more efficient, so sweating starts earlier
  • Caffeine intake, spicy food
  • Genetics
  • Stress

However, some people have ‘excessive sweating’, where the amount of sweat produced is above normal and interferes with daily life. This is a medical condition called “hyperhidrosis.” It is a condition that sufferers often live with for years, dealing on a daily basis with the embarrassment or lack of confidence which results from having uncontrollably damp armpits.

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox injections are incredibly effective, drying up the condition for months at a time.

Botulinum toxin is a powerful prescription-only medicine which is more commonly associated with anti-ageing treatments, but it has a host of medical applications too – including stemming excessive sweating.

In this treatment, Botox is injected into the armpits with about 20 tiny injections spread across the region. The Botox works to block the nerve signals causing the body to sweat, leading to dry armpits and new found confidence.

Botox must be prescribed by a medical professional who has seen and consulted the patient. As there are some potential underlying medical conditions which can cause elevated levels of sweating, it is important that the consultation is thorough.
