Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Summer Tips

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s an important reminder for all of us to take a moment to reflect on the health of our skin.

We know the sun feels wonderful on our skin, but it’s crucial to remember that prolonged sun exposure can lead to unseen damage that may increase the risk of melanoma — a serious and potentially life-threatening form of skin cancer.

    What is Melanoma?

Melanoma occurs when the cells responsible for producing pigment in your skin — melanocytes — begin to grow uncontrollably. It may appear as a new mole, or as a change in an existing mole’s size, shape, or colour.

While melanoma is less common than other types of skin cancer, early detection is key. When identified and treated early, melanoma is highly treatable, but if left unchecked, it can spread and become more difficult to manage.

We want to help you protect your skin — and your health.

How Does Sun Damage Lead to Skin Cancer?

Sun damage occurs when ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate deep into the skin. This damage can accumulate over time and cause the DNA in skin cells to mutate, leading to cancer. The longer and more frequently you’re exposed to the sun, the higher the risk.

Protect Your Skin This Summer: The Essential Steps

When it comes to protecting your skin, SPF is your first line of defense. It’s not just about sunscreen — it’s about committing to a daily routine that shields your skin from harmful UV rays, whether you’re spending hours in the sun or just going about your day. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:

    Summer Skin Tips

    • Use Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
EVERY DAY! Choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
    • Wear Protective Clothing
Shield your skin with hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves when possible – especially during peak sun hours.
    • Stay in the Shade
If you’re outside during the hottest parts of the day, seek out shade to reduce your direct sun exposure.
    • Hydrate
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin nourished from the inside out.
    • After-Sun Care
After spending time in the sun, use moisturisers to help your skin recover and stay hydrated.
    • Get Your Skin Checked Regularly
If you notice any changes in your moles or spots – or if you develop a new one – see a dermatologist or GP straightaway.

Treatments to Help Repair Sun Damage

Even with the best prevention, sun damage can leave its mark. If you’re noticing uneven pigmentation, fine lines, or a dull complexion, there are treatments that can help:

    • NeoGen: Uses plasma energy to rejuvenate skin, stimulate collagen, and reduce pigmentation.
    • Chemical Peels: Exfoliate the skin’s surface to improve texture, tone, and pigmentation.
    • Microneedling: Boosts collagen production to reduce fine lines, scarring, and sun-related hyperpigmentation.
    • Polynucleotides: Regenerate sun-damaged skin, promoting hydration and smoother, more even skin.
    • Skin Boosters: Injectable treatments that deeply hydrate and restore skin elasticity for a radiant glow.
    • Tailored Skin Care: A personalised routine with medical-grade products to maintain a healthy complexion and protect against further damage.
