Migraine sufferers could now be offered BOTOX® to treat their headaches.
BOTOX® injections were approved by the NHS for treating severe migraine in 2012 after guidelines published by NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence). However, that does not mean that it is readily available, as it is down to local areas to define their own policies for patient criteria. For example, NHS Grampian has recently announced that it will offer BOTOX® where it is an appropriate option for patients with chronic migraine (which is headaches occurring on 15 or more days each month) although the health board is still clarifying the “final details” of how it will all work.
The Migraine Trust says eight million people in the UK suffer from migraines, making it the most common neurological condition in the developed world and more common than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined.
In trials, after 12 months, 70% of those treated had ≤50% the number of headaches that they had done originally.
An NHS report has previously said that the reason why BOTOX® seems to help migraines are not clear. Some believe that it is due to the relaxation of muscles around the head, which reduces pressure on or within the brain. Other theories suggest that Botulinum toxin has been shown to reduce pain in a number of disease states, including lower back pain and a list of other conditions. Botulinum toxin is believed to inhibit the neurotransmitters to the central pain processing systems that generate migraine headaches.
“I’ve found this treatment to be life changing for those with chronic migraine, it can in some cases completely prevent a headache that is present nearly every day, and this really gives your life back.”
“It’s ideal for those who do not wish to take tablets on a daily basis, but may not be worth it for those who only get migraines a few times a year. “
