NeoGen Plasma vs Laser, IPL and More

SkinViva Clinic’s NeoGen is a truly innovative skin treatment which uses advanced technology to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin.

When we think about high tech skin treatments, lasers often spring to mind, but NeoGen is NOT a laser device; nor does it use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).

In fact nitrogen plasma was developed as an alternative to CO2 lasers in order to offer an equally effective treatment with less risk of infection or pigmentary reactions.

Let’s find out more about how NeoGen compares to laser and other energy treatments.

    What is laser?

Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It uses light to stimulate the skin in a process known as phototherapy.

How does NeoGen compare to laser?

NeoGen plasma is not a light source based treatment. It uses the plasma which is created when enough energy is applied to a gas to enable electrons to escape. Thermal energy is released when electrons are recaptured by positively charged atoms.

This means that NeoGen doesn’t require a chromophore (coloured molecule) target such as melanin or oxyhaemoglobin in the way that light based treatments do.

Plasma doesn’t vaporise the skin tissue like a laser treatment.

Plasma desiccates the epidermis, resulting in a protective barrier, which acts as a natural biological dressing over the treated area. This promotes wound healing and enables rapid recovery compared to laser/IPL light based treatments.

Another key point to consider is that laser is generally either ablative (an intensive process which works to remove the outer epidermal and superficial dermal layers of the skin) or fractional (uses a laser beam divided into thousands of microscopic treatment zones to treat a ‘fraction’ of the skin, leaving leaves microscopic columns of untreated tissue in order to aid recovery).

NeoGen plasma is different to both as it treats the whole skin architecture. It doesn’t aggressively damage the outer layer and doesn’t leave sections of untreated skin, yielding cleansed, high quality skin, with improved texture, tone and healthy appearance

    NeoGen vs other energy treatments

If you’re looking into advanced skin treatments, it is other technologies you may come across include:

    • Radio Frequency delivers thermal energy of above 40 °C to the dermis, denaturing collagen stimulating a healing response which remodels collagen and elastin fibres.
    • Intense Pulsed Light is a light therapy used to treat the dermis without harming the epidermis. It uses a broadband of light wave lengths to target specific chromophores.
    • High Intensity Focused Ultrasound uses ultrasound energy to tighten skin and contour the body by stimulating collagen repair or destroying fat cells.

    Why SkinViva Clinic chose NeoGen

SkinViva is known for safe and effective treatments. Our team assessed a number of options, but NeoGen stood out as being unique with an excellent safety profile and outstanding results. The plasma stimulates all the skin efficiently leaving it ready to heal quickly for a great result. There is low risk of any adverse reaction or complications as the treated epidermis forms a protective layer while the skin below heals.

NeoGen works in two ways, simultaneously.

    1. Superficially at the zone of damage (epidermis), re-epithelisation takes place resulting in improved tone texture and a healthy appearance.
At low energy it also enables improved topical drug absorption, while at higher energy it forms a natural biological dressing, which protects the new skin architecture that is being generated deeper in the skin tissue.
It also promotes faster healing when compared to other technologies such as Laser.
    2. Secondly stimulation of fibroblast activity in the dermis leads to neocollagenisis and elastin remodelling, which results in skin tightening and thickening of the epidermis. It is also worth noting that Neogen plasma is unlikely to penetrate deeper into the subcutaneous fat layer of the skin, as this could result in unwanted and uneven fat loss which can occur with RF and HIFU. This means that there is no risk of adverse facial fat loss and older looking skin.

    Versatile treatment

NeoGen has a range of potential uses for improving the skin. Anti-ageing is the most popular, but other approved applications include:

    • Cherry angioma
    • Facial lines and wrinkles
