Menopause and Your Skin – Expert Advice From Dr Shazia

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable shift in attitudes and awareness surrounding menopause. This change is largely due to a growing number of women openly discussing their experiences, increased media coverage, and greater acceptance of menopause as a natural part of ageing.

At SkinViva Clinic, we’ve noticed more women questioning what changes they can expect in their skin during the perimenopause/menopause process and into post-menopause.

    Menopause Skin Expert Advice

    Dr Shazia

SkinViva’s Dr Shazia shared her advice on how menopause affects the skin in a short video:

    Shazia says:

“So are you worried about menopause and your skin?

“I’m Dr Shazia and as a breast surgeon I’m always asked about how menopause will affect skin and ageing, and about women’s health.

“So really it’s important that you prepare for that stage of your life by being well informed.

“One of the commonest things that women experience with the menopause is sagging of the skin which can cause a drop, loss of collagen because of the loss of elasticity and also fine lines – and a lot of this is contributed to the lack of oestrogen as you go through the menopause and the suppression of female hormones.

“We can give you lots of advice on how to avoid that and prepare for that.”

So if you think that hormonal changes are affecting your skin, why not book a free consultation to find out more. Our clinicians are all medically qualified (doctors, dentists or nurses) and can offer expert diagnosis and advice based on their extensive experience. They can advise on how to care for your skin at home as well as recommending treatments that could help.

    Menopause welcome here!

SkinViva Clinic is proud to welcome and embrace the increased openness about the menopause. It’s great to see more women comfortably discussing menopause openly, breaking down the stigma and taboos associated with it. This openness has helped to normalise the experience and create a more supportive environment for women going through menopause.

The media has played a huge and vital part in raising awareness through television, print, and online platforms. This increased visibility has helped to educate the public about the symptoms, challenges, and treatments associated with menopause. The medical and wellness communities have also become more focused on addressing the needs of menopausal women. This includes increased research, development of new treatments, and greater emphasis on preventive care. In addition, there is a growing recognition of the impact that menopause can have on women’s health, productivity, and well-being. This has led to increased efforts to create more menopause-friendly workplaces and to promote policies that support women during this transition.

The internet has played a significant role in connecting women going through menopause. Online communities and support groups provide a platform for women to share experiences, seek advice, and offer support to one another.

The increased awareness and acceptance of menopause have led to a more supportive and understanding environment for women. This shift is empowering women to take control of their health and well-being during this important life stage.

    Coping with Menopause Symptoms

Menopause can be a challenging time for many women, and experiencing symptoms can significantly impact daily life. If you’re struggling with menopause symptoms, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Consult a Healthcare Professional:
      • GP Visit: Start by consulting your GP. They can assess your symptoms, rule out any underlying health conditions, and provide personalised advice.
      • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Your GP may recommend HRT as a treatment option for symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. However, it’s important to discuss the potential benefits and risks with your doctor.
      • Other Therapies: There is growing acceptance of other therapies and treatments. Your GP may be able to refer or connect you.
    2. Lifestyle Changes:
      • Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet can help manage symptoms. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
      • Regular Exercise: Physical activity can improve your mood, reduce stress, and help manage hot flushes.
      • Stress Management: Relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
      • Sleep Hygiene: Ensure you have a good sleep routine to improve sleep quality.
    3. Complementary Therapies:
      • Acupuncture: Some women find acupuncture helpful for managing menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings.
      • Herbal Remedies: While some herbal remedies may offer relief, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements.
    4. Support Groups and Counselling:
      • Connect with Others: Joining a menopause support group can provide emotional support and practical advice from women who have experienced similar symptoms.
      • Counselling: If you’re struggling with emotional challenges related to menopause, consider seeking counselling or therapy.
    5. Local Resources:
      • NHS Services: The NHS offers a range of services to support women going through menopause, including information, advice, and treatment options.
      • Menopause Support Groups: Check with local organisations or community centres for menopause support groups in your area.

Remember, you’re not alone. Many women experience menopause symptoms, and there are effective strategies to manage them. By seeking professional advice, making lifestyle changes, and exploring complementary therapies, you can improve your quality of life during this transition.
