What is collagen?
Collagen is a protein in our body that is found in connective tissue, skin, cartilage and bone. It provides structure to our skin and helps to strengthen bones.
When you have healthy levels of collagen in your skin, the stronger and more youthful your skin will be. When your body contains higher levels of collagen, it can produce and maintain more collagen too.
Unfortunately, collagen production decreases as part of the natural ageing process.
How to make more collagen
There are several effective ways of producing more collagen:
Nutrition/Supplements
There are a number of supplements or foods suggested that could help with natural collagen production. There’s no guarantee, but this is the cheapest solution and you may decide it’s worth a try.
- Vitamin C
Increasing your intake of vitamin C will help to boost collagen because it aids the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, which is responsible for helping the body to recover and promotes more supple skin. Eating foods that are rich in vitamin C such as oranges, strawberries, peppers, broccoli and brussels sprouts will help you to boost your vitamin C intake, or you can take vitamin C supplements.
- Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is renowned for its healing properties, helping to repair skin cells after burns and cuts. It can be applied directly onto the skin to treat sunburn, for example, or it can be taken orally as capsules, tablets or even juice. Aloe vera stimulates cell growth which boosts collagen production, so applying aloe vera to your skin or taking oral aloe vera products is another good way to achieve youthful skin.
- Ginseng
Many studies have found ginseng has anti-ageing properties and some studies have also found that it can be effective in reducing age-related neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. There are lots of options for incorporating ginseng into your diet; you can have ginseng tea, or you can use it in recipes for soups and stir-frys. You can also buy ginseng tablets to take before meals.
- Coriander leaf extract
While coriander is most commonly used as a culinary spice, it has numerous health benefits that you might not be aware of. Coriander leaf is believed to help lower blood sugar levels, boost immunity and enhance gut health, as well as having anti-ageing properties that boost collagen in the skin.
Skincare Products
If supplements and nutrition aren’t really making enough of a difference, the next step up is to invest in cosmeceutical skincare with active ingredients.
There is a large range of skincare products that can be applied to boost collagen production. SkinViva recommends Neostrata Correct Firming Collagen Booster, which can be purchased through our online shop. The serum has been formulated to replenish collagen to leave a more sculpted and taut appearance.
Skincare Treatments
The ultimate solution to boosting collagen is to try one of the many professional skincare treatments or facials.
SkinViva Clinic in Manchester has a range of treatments, delivered by SkinCare Specialists. These work in different ways to stimulate the skin’s own cell renewal mechanisms; which includes boosting collagen production
Collagen builds up during the weeks following treatment, so results are lovely and natural.
SkinCare treatments are ideal for use alongside inejctables. Professional aesthetics treatments such as anti-ageing injections are a faster way to smooth out wrinkles and dermal fillers add volume to deliver instant results. Yet results can be considerably enhanced by the addition of a procedure that helps to stimulate collagen production for naturally smoother and tighter looking skin.
