How to Choose Your Aesthetics Practitioner

Despite aesthetics involving complicated procedures such as dermal fillers, where hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin’s surface, there is very minimal governance and a lack of regulation in the industry. This has resulted in people performing treatments that they are not qualified to do, and in many cases, their clients have had complications.

Being given a treatment by someone who is unqualified is hugely dangerous and could have permanent consequences, as well as potentially being very painful if the procedure is performed incorrectly. Taking a gamble on an unqualified aesthetics practitioner is a decision that you could live to regret, which is why you should do your research before you book an appointment.

To make sure that you do not put yourself at risk when you have an aesthetics treatment, here are some tips on how to choose your practitioner:

    • Check which qualifications they have. Aesthetics practitioners should be registered medical professionals with full qualifications. They should therefore have qualifications such as a doctor (regulatory body GMC) or a nurse (regulatory body NMC) or other medical professionals including Dentists etc.

    • Make sure you have a comprehensive consultation. Before any aesthetics treatment is performed, a thorough consultation should take place, where the clinician discusses your requirements and outlines the procedure in detail. They should be able to answer all of the questions that you have and should sound confident and knowledgeable about the precise technique and treatment design. If they do not offer you a consultation before your treatment, this is a clear indication that you should not use them. You should be provided with time to think about whether to go ahead with the treatment after you have had your consultation.

    • Check for visible health and safety precautions in the clinic. When you enter the clinic, you will probably get a good idea of how professional they are but there should be some visible signs that the clinic takes health and safety very seriously, such as hygiene levels, use of the correct equipment, as well as a very private space for your consultation and treatment.

    • Ask for real life examples of work. Aesthetics is not a service that you should take someone’s word about – as them to demonstrate that they are experienced.  You should seek proof by asking to see examples of their work. They should have original before and after photos of their own clients i.e. ones that have not been taken from Google.

    • Check the products they use. Do their products display the relevant marking to show it has met the required standards? For example, dermal fillers should have the CE marking to confirm it conforms with health, safety and environmental protection standards.
