There is something a bit uncomfortable about suggesting that plastic surgery could make a person ‘more likeable’, but studies have shown that it is indeed the case and how you look does influence how other people see you.
A study published in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery in 2015 showed that women who’d had ‘work done’ were perceived as more likeable, attractive and feminine.
Study author Dr. Michael Reilly, assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., explained:
“One of the goals of this study was to try and figure out, in a scientifically credible and accurate way, what other people are actually ‘seeing’ when they see the results.”
The study consisted of showing before and after photos of 30 patients to 170 people. The photos illustrated a variety of facial rejuvenation treatments from face lifts to chin implants.
Dr. Michael Reilly continues:
“The reactions were very, very positive.
“Yes, they saw women who appeared to them to be more likeable after surgery. And there was even a trend towards perceiving them to be more trustworthy, which I do realize is a little ironic, given that, to be honest, you’re kind of being a little deceptive when you’re going in for cosmetic surgery.”
Timothy Smith, a professor of psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, added another dimension to the findings:
“Essentially, what plastic surgery does is remove abnormalities . . . because attractiveness is really just the absence of remarkable features.
“Then you line that up with a lot of literature that has repeatedly demonstrated that people who are perceived to be more attractive do tend to be rated more favorably on personality traits of all types — more likeable, more trustworthy.”
Although the study concentrated on surgical procedures, significant enhancements can be achieved with non-surgical treatments and the latest products and techniques mean that cosmetic treatments are a very viable option for many patients.
SkinViva offer a range of injectable and skin-improvement procedures.
A spokesperson for the company commented on the survey, saying:
“We see a number of patients who are seeking treatment because they feel their appearance affects how other people see them.
“For example, many women find that as they age crevices on the forehead can make them look angry or cross. Others find that the hollows beneath the eyes create an impression of someone who is exhausted and lacks energy or vibrancy.
“Tackling these signs of ageing can create a remarkable transformation.
“The before and after photos featured adjacent show a patient whose treatments enabled her to look much fresher and brighter. Her whole appearance looks calmer and less tired as well as younger.”
BOTOX® is the world’s most popular anti-ageing injection and the top procedure carried out by SkinViva. This works to relaxes the fine dynamic facial muscles which cause lines and wrinkles allowing the skin to drape more smoothly and with a noticeable and rejuvenating reduction in lines. Common treatment areas include the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet.
Dermal fillers are another popular option. These are used to restore lost volume, smoothing out hollows and creases for a firmer and smoother look.
