The headlines might sound alarmist – ‘BOTOX clinic for children to open’. However, this is not about the wrinkle relaxing treatment, but using the powerful botulinum toxin injections to help with disabilities.
Botulinum toxin has a host of medical applications as well as anti-ageing and one such treatment is for spasticity, a prevalent symptom of cerebral palsy.
Spasticity is a condition in which certain muscles are continuously contracted, causing stiffness or tightness of the muscles which impairs normal movement and speech. It can be painful and distressing for the patient.
Injections of Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX® injections) can help to prevent the development of muscle contractures and bone deformities.
Enable Ireland, who provide services to children and adults with disabilities and their families, are planning to open a clinic in Galway to administer BOTOX injections to children who suffer from the condition. The only other similar clinic in Ireland is based in Dublin.
Ciaran O’Flatharta, physiotherapist at Enable Ireland who will oversee the running of the clinic, said having a clinic in the West of Ireland will make treatment a lot more accessible for families and children.
“Two of the main benefits of it will be that it will save families and kids having to drive up and down to Dublin so usually they would often have to go to someplace like Temple Street or the Central Remedial Clinic in Dublin and they’d go up for an assessment and then they’d be put on a waiting list for another 3-6 months so they’d have two return trips to Dublin.
“Financially, as you can imagine, it’s cost saving for families.
“Having a service in Galway would mean that any therapy or follow up that they get will be with local therapists that will be responsible for the aftercare which is another thing.”
This is just one of a host of medical applications for BOTOX, which can also be used for treating migraine, Bell’s Palsy, bladder conditions and excessive sweating.
SkinViva’s Doctors & Dentists offer a range of non-surgical treatments with advanced use of BOTOX and fillers.
Their team offer free consultations at their main clinic in Manchester and also work closely with partner locations across the North West. Clinics are held at salons and centres in Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Manchester, Stockport and Bury.
A consultation is always required prior to any cosmetic treatment and this is arranged with an experienced aesthetic practitioner. The same individual would carry out treatment and this can normally be done at the same appointment if required.
