Are You Secret or Open About Aesthetic Treatments?

Aesthetic treatments have been going through a curious evolution from something that was secret and personal to something that people are happy to talk about – even proud to shout about!

Surveys in the past have shown that while a majority of women feel that having cosmetic treatments is socially acceptable, around a third of women who have had or would consider having facial injectables themselves would actually choose to keep it a secret (source Allergan survey 2017).

There is more media coverage than ever of celebrity anti-ageing and beautifying treatments and speculation as to who’s had what done. On the one hand, this exposure could be seen to ‘normalise’ having such treatments; yet on the other hand could make some people feel a bit reluctant to share their own experiences.

Certainly transparency about treatment could be a useful thing. It would help others to understand the potential benefit of treatment for ‘real people’. It also helps to reassure others that fabulous appearances are not just down to skin creams and a good sleep. Anti-ageing injections can achieve great results in smoothing out wrinkles for younger looking skin, but not everyone is aware of this.

If you have had them, don’t be afraid to talk about them. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it can be empowering to share your story and help others who may be considering aesthetic treatments.

There are a few reasons why some people are secretive about aesthetic treatments while others speak openly about them.

    • Fear of embarrassment – some people may worry that others will judge them for wanting to change their appearance, or think that they are vain or insecure. They’re afraid of ridicule,
    • Concerns about stigma – some people may worry about being judged negatively by friends, family, or co-workers who don’t agree with their decision to have treatments. Keeping it a secret can be a way to avoid conflict.
    • Prefer privacy – some people simply prefer to keep their aesthetic treatments private and not to share personal details about their appearance or health with others.
    • Social norms – some people may have concerns about cosmetic procedures for cultural reasons or feel it taboo in their social circles. Keeping it private is a way to avoid criticism or ostracism.

On the other hand, there are also a number of reasons why people might speak openly about aesthetic treatments.

    • Encouraging others – some people share their own experiences in order to inspire others to feel more confident about their appearance.
    • Raising awareness – some people might want to dispel the stigma associated with these treatments and show that they are safe and effective.
    • Not caring what others think – some people may be so comfortable with their decision to have aesthetic treatments that they are not afraid to talk about them.
    • Promotion purposes – some people (e.g. certain celebrities or influencers) may choose to discuss their aesthetic treatments openly to promote a particular product or physician.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to speak openly about aesthetic treatments is a very personal one. There is no right or wrong answer. It is important to do what feels right for you.
