Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Boosts Skin Elasticity

Botox Results Last up to 4 months

A new study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery has demonstrated that botox could improve the pliability and elasticity of skin for up to 4 months.

It has long been used as an anti-ageing treatment but primarily in order to smooth out lines and wrinkles by relaxing the fine dynamic facial muscle movements. However, these results indicate that there are other positive effects occurring within the skin.

Canadian researchers Dr. James P. Bonaparte (University of Ottawa) and Dr. David Ellis (University of Toronto) were investigating the the effects of botox on the skin by examining pliability and elasticity, which are known to weaken with the ageing process. They explain:

“As one ages, these biomechanical properties change.”

“Of these age-related changes, the loss of skin elasticity appears to be the most prominent.”

The study looked at a group of women with an average age of 55 who had botox for mild wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. The pliability and elasticity of each woman’s skin were assessed before treatment and at 2 weeks, 2 months, 3 months and 4 months later.

The team found that the botox injections increased both the pliability and elasticity of their skin for up to 4 months – which is a similar duration to the wrinkle-relaxing effects of botox injections.

The study also found that botox injections appeared to temporarily reverse damage to skin elasticity caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation for around 4 months.

Commenting on the findings, the researchers say:

“This study found an increase in skin pliability and elasticity with a corresponding reduction in the UV after treatment of facial wrinkling with onabotulinum toxin A.”

Commenting on the study, Dr Catherine Winslow (Indiana University School of Medicine) said the research supported previous findings which had shown a link between botox and skin pliability and elasticity.
