Research: BOTOX and Happiness

Look Good Feel Good?

There may be more to this maxim than meets the eye, as research indicates that BOTOX® injections can help mood.

Research cited in Aesthetics Journal suggests when patients with major depressive disorder were treated with BOTOX®, 9 out of 10 noticed a reduction in their depression symptoms. This backs up previous research, which has shown that the action of frowning can reinforce the feelings of depression; but as BOTOX® suppresses the frowning action, this stops the signals to the brain that indicate stress and ultimately help a person to feel better.

Psychologist Dr Richard Sherry told the Daily Telegraph that when others perceive us looking happy or unhappy, this has a mirroring effect on our emotional wellbeing. Therefore for patients whose face looks unhappy or angry when it’s relaxed, BOTOX® could improve how they feel. He explained:

“If you appear sad and stressed, it creates negative feedback from those you come into contact with, as our face is our main communication platform.”

So how the face appears externally when relaxed is key to how others view you, which in turn influences self-perception.

Without a positive ‘smile’ action, some patients find that their face forms deep frown lines between the eyes making them look angry. Others describe sad eyes or downturned mouth. Even though the feel fine, how they look does inevitably get noticed by others.

Aesthetic treatments should not be considered as a treatment for depression, but researchers have demonstrated that there is some merit in the idea that patients who look content and refreshed on the outside can feel it on the inside too.

    BOTOX® Injections

BOTOX® is the world’s most popular wrinkle relaxing injection, thanks largely to its proven efficacy in tackling the signs of ageing. Botox relaxes the fine dynamic facial muscles which cause lines and wrinkles allowing the skin to drape more smoothly and with a noticeable and rejuvenating reduction in lines.

Common treatment areas include the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet.

SkinViva’s Doctors & Dentists offer a range of non-surgical treatments with advanced use of BOTOX® and fillers.

Their team offer free consultations at their main clinic in Manchester and also work closely with partner locations across the North West. Clinics are held at salons and centres in Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Manchester, Stockport and Bury.

A consultation is always required prior to any cosmetic treatment and this is arranged with an experienced aesthetic clinician. The same individual would carry out treatment and this can normally be done at the same appointment if required.
