Are Lip Fillers Temporary?

SkinViva’s head clinician  Dr Tim Pearce has given his expert opinion on one of the most commonly asked questions regarding lip fillers… Are Lip Fillers Temporary?

According to Dr Tim, the answer to this very much depends on the type of filler that you choose. For example some lip fillers i.e. silicone and surgical implants are classed as permanent because they don’t break down once they are in the skin.

However, Dr Tim warns that opting for a non-reversible filler can be very risky because you can’t always be sure of the results and if something goes wrong (or you just don’t like them), they can be very difficult to remove.

The most common type of lip fillers in the market today are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Dr Tim explains that these fillers are not only the safest and most reliable to use, but also achieve the most beautiful and natural results, whilst being completely reversible!

Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the skin meaning that once it is injected, it integrates with the skin giving it a soft, natural appearance and avoiding the dreaded ‘trout pout’ that can be an unfortunate side effect of permanent lip fillers.

There are a number of manufacturers of HA dermal fillers some of which include, Restylane, Teosyl and Emerval. Although Dr Tim’s favourite is Juvederm by Allergan, particularly their long lasting Vycross range, which gives clients the highest quality results for up to 18 months before gradually breaking down in the skin and allowing the lips to return to normal. Other HA dermal fillers typically last up to 9 months.

If for some reason, you don’t like your result or have had an adverse reaction to the treatment, the beauty of HA dermal fillers such as Juvederm is that they can be completely reversed (using a reversal agent called Hyalase) within a matter of hours, leaving no trace that they had ever been there! Unfortunately the same cannot be said of permanent fillers which can cause people serious problems if they suffer a reaction.

Permanent lip fillers may seem tempting because they only require a one off treatment and the results should last a lifetime, however, It is important to remember that all dermal filler treatments come with risks attached and choosing a dermal filler that is safe, reliable and most importantly reversible, should be the most important consideration for anyone seeking a cosmetic treatment and for the medical professionals who provide it to them.
